News: Advance in understanding superlubricity

First principles calculations were performed in order to investigate nanomechanical properties of the six archetypal TMDs (MoX2 and WX2; X=S, Se, Te) and how incommensuration affects the (static) frictional properties of MoS2. It is also one of very few works which treats incommensurate structures fully ab initio. The work is of particular value to any ESR working in a computational project, and in particular it has helped Victor Claerbout by providing a starting point for his line of research into sliding dynamics of MoS2 and his refinement of the fundamental understanding of incommensuration in bilayers and the net effect(s) on their frictional characteristics.
